Understanding Opioid Overdose & Naloxone

Opioids include prescription pain medications such as Oxycontin, Morphine, and Vicodin as well as substances like heroin.

  • Opioid overdose occurs when there are so many opioids or a combination of opioids and other substances in the body that an individual is not responsive to stimulation and/or breathing is inadequate. Opioid overdose can result from taking pain medications incorrectly or accidental ingestion.
  • Oxygen starvation due to inadequate breathing eventually stops vital organs like the heart and the brain which leads to unconsciousness, coma, and then death.
  • Naloxone is a medication designed to temporarily reverse an opioid overdose.
  • Naloxone counteracts the life-threatening depression of the central nervous system and respiratory system, allowing an overdose victim to breathe normally.
  • Traditionally administered by emergency response personnel, it can be administered by minimally trained layperson which makes it ideal for treating overdose in people prescribed opioid pain medication and in people who use heroin and other opioids.
