The Marshall County Health Department and the Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department is offering free tetanus vaccine for those impacted by recent flooding.

The health department reminds residents and responders who are assisting with flood cleanup should confirm they’re up to date on their tetanus vaccination.

Adults should get vaccinated for tetanus every 10 years and pregnant women should obtain a shot during every pregnancy.

Residents should avoid contact with floodwater. Floodwater and standing waters can be dangerous and can make you vulnerable to infectious diseases, chemical hazards, and injuries. Be aware that floodwater may contain sewage, and eating or drinking anything contaminated by floodwater can cause diarrheal disease (such as E. coli or Salmonella infection).
