The Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department and the Wheeling Housing Authority will be holding a series of meetings to address a new smoke free building policy.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) recently finalized a new law requiring all public housing units to become “smoke-free” facilities. The rule will protect staff and residents working and living in federally owned and operated public housing units from the dangers of secondhand smoke exposure

The HUD Smoke Free Public Housing Rule was finalized in 2016 and became effective February 3, 2017. All public housing authorities must comply with the rule and implement smoke free policies within 18 months of the effective date.  More than 600 public housing agencies (PHA) have already gone smoke free across the country.

The rule prohibits lit tobacco products in units, common areas, PHA administrative offices, and all areas within 25 feet of buildings. This will reduce the risk of exposure to second-hand smoke and smoke-related maintenance costs, benefiting all PHA staff and residents. The rules apply to all public housing authority types, including single family.

The health department and housing authority will hold educational information sessions for Wheeling public housing facilities on:

  • August 3 at Hil-Dar
  • August 9 at Booker T. Washington Plaza
  • August 14 at Riverview Towers
  • August 17 at Luau Manor
  • August 25 at Garden Park Terrace Apartments

All session are at 2:00pm and are open to public housing residents of the Wheeling Housing Authority. For more information contact the Wheeling Housing Authority at (304) 242-4447 or the Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department at (304) 234-3682.
