Wheeling-Ohio County Board of Health Approves New Tanning Bed Regulation

WHEELING, WV – The Wheeling-Ohio County Board of Health has approved the adoption of a new Tanning Bed Regulation. This Regulation shall be known as the Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department Tanning Facility Regulation and shall cover Ohio County, West Virginia.

The regulation will go into effect on January 10, 2017. All tanning facilities must register with the health department and obtain a Tanning Facility Certificate.  Staff from the department will be contacting facilities throughout January to assist in the registration process.

The regulation includes proof of age requirements; no one under the age of fourteen (14) will be allowed to use the tanning facility and anyone between the ages of fourteen (14) and eighteen (18) must have a parent or guardian present. The regulation will also contain sanitary requirements and tanning facility operator training requirements. The regulation is based on State of West Virginia legislation, Senate Bill No. 464 in 2013 concerning tanning facilities and prohibiting minors from using a tanning facility in West Virginia. The charge of enforcement is assigned to the local health departments.
