Environmental Health Inspectors at the Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department are responsible for permitting and inspecting specific business and operations that are covered under West Virginia and Federal rules. These include all public food facilities such as restaurants, supermarkets, food trucks, caterers, vending machines, portable food operations, food banks/food pantries, temporary food operations and other retail food operations.

Staff also permit and inspect Child Care Centers, Manufactured Home Communities, Recreational Water Facilities/Pools, Labor Camps, Public & Private Schools, Body Piercing Studios, Mass Gatherings, Fairs and Festivals, Care Facilities (Shelter/Group Homes), Sewage Cleaning Trucks, Tattoo Studio Operations (including temporary operations), Organized Camps, Industrial Camps, Campgrounds, Tanning Facilities, Hotel/Motel operations and more in Ohio County.

Environmental Health Inspectors also conduct investigations of foodborne illness complaints related to food facilities, sanitation and vector control issues and other public health complaints.
