The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that children down to 6 months of age get an updated COVID-19 Vaccine (2023 – 2024 Formula) to provide protection during the Fall and Winter months. Children under 6 months of age are currently not authorized for any COVID-19 doses.
Children ages 6 months to 4 years who are moderately or severely immunocompromised have the option to receive 1 additional dose of updated (2023 – 2024 Formula) vaccine at least 2 months following the last recommended updated (2023 – 2024) mRNA vaccine dose.
An 8-week interval between the first and second COVID-19 vaccine (Moderna, Novavax and Pfizer-BioNTech) doses may be optimal for some people as it may reduce the small risk of myocarditis and pericarditis.

How does the end of the public health emergency effect the COVID-19 vaccine?
In the past, most costs associated with COVID-19 vaccination were covered through funding from the Federal Government. If you have private health insurance, go to your health care provider or pharmacy to get your updated vaccine. The cost for the vaccine has changed.
Who is eligible to receive a vaccination through the “Bridge Access” program?
Adults 19 – 64 who are uninsured or underinsured. Additionally, children who are Vaccine for Children (VFC) eligible are able to receive the vaccine.
Where can I get this updated COVID-19 vaccine?
If you have private insurance, Medicaid or Medicare, you can get COVID-19 vaccines at pharmacies or from your health care provider.
If you do not have health insurance or are underinsured you can get free COVID-19 vaccines through the Bridge Access Program at Pharmacies, Federally Qualified Health Centers or your local health department.
The Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department expects to receive a limited supply of the updated COVID-19 vaccine that will be reserved for the following eligible population:
- 19 years of age and older uninsured or underinsured individuals through the Bridge Access Program
- Ages 6 months to 18 years who qualify for the Vaccines for Children Program
